Why I No Longer Say "Namaste" at the End of My Classes

Hey, lovely souls!

I wanted to share a little change I've made in my teaching practice that feels really right for me. I've stopped saying "Namaste" at the end of my yoga classes, and I want to explain why this shift has been so important to me as I continue to grow through my practice and teachings.

The Journey to Authenticity 🌸

For a long time, I would wrap up every class with "Namaste." It seemed like the “right” way to end my classes. But as I've delved deeper into the roots of yoga, I've realized that "Namaste" might not always be appropriate.

Understanding "Namaste" 🌼

"Namaste" can be translated to “the light from within me sees and bows to the light within you.” In fact, it’s often used as a greeting in many parts of the East and isn't traditionally tied to yoga practice. The word has a deep spiritual meaning, recognizing the divine light in each of us. It feels wrong to use it at the end of a class that's focused purely on asanas without any deeper spiritual context.

Shifting Towards Authenticity 🌟

In a resort setting like the one I teach at, many students want a stretch class but not a spiritual experience and they merely call it yoga. By ending with "thank you," I acknowledge their participation without appropriating the beautiful practice that is yoga.

Besides, I can still have an incredible and spiritual class without saying “Namaste” at the end.

Embracing Change 🌻

Even though I’ve made this shift, it’s crazy to see how often people are still waiting with their palms in Anjali Mudra just so they can say “Namaste.” It makes me wonder if they even know what that mudra means or if they understand what they’re saying…

So I challenge you, friend: end your practice with "thank you." You can place your hands on your heart to connect to your love and light. But change how you acknowledge the end of a practice.

Conclusion 🌈

I’m going to keep growing and understanding yoga’s roots. This practice has supported me and should be properly appreciated. I’m glad you're part of this journey with me, friend.

With love and light,

Camryn
