How Music Affects Your Subconscious: Step Into Your Power By Changing Your Playlist

Well, hello there!

I recently wrote a post about how music affects your yoga and healing practice. Obviously we love sound baths and different frequencies, but for the average person, you’re probably not putting meditation music on in the background.

Most likely, you’re blasting your favorite playlist without even thinking about it. You may love your repeat songs, but do you realize that those lyrics are playing in the back of your head in a loop? Those songs become mantras for your subconscious mind and manifests into your conscious mind.

Music is a powerful tool, love. It’s time to change your relationship to it.

The Science Behind Music and the Brain 🧠

Our brains are incredible, constantly processing information and responding to the world around us. When you listen to music, the frequencies of the sound waves interact with your brainwaves, influencing how you feel and think. Different types of music can stimulate different parts of the brain—calm music can slow your brainwaves down, helping you relax, while faster beats can energize and motivate you.

But it’s not just about the conscious effects. Music also taps into your subconscious, the part of your mind that quietly processes thoughts, memories, and emotions. The frequencies in music can influence your subconscious in ways you might not even realize, shaping your mood, mindset, and even your behavior.

The subconscious mind is like a sponge, absorbing everything we hear, even when we’re not actively paying attention. This is why the music you choose to listen to matters—it’s not just background noise.

The Alpha-Theta Connection 🌙

When you’re just waking up, your brain is in this state where it’s transitioning from sleep to full wakefulness. During sleep, especially in the later stages, your brain is in a theta wave state—these are slower brainwaves associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and the subconscious mind.

As you begin to wake up, your brain shifts into alpha waves. These are a bit faster than theta waves but still associated with a calm, relaxed state. Alpha waves are often linked to that peaceful, dreamy feeling you have when you’re just starting to wake up—kind of like being in a gentle, meditative state.

Why This Matters 🌅

This alpha-theta transition is a powerful time because your brain is super receptive. It’s almost like a blank canvas, ready to absorb whatever you give it. That’s why those first thoughts in the morning can set the tone for your entire day.

If you fill your mind with positivity and intention during this time, you’re more likely to carry those good vibes throughout the day. This is why we hear over and over not to check our phones when we first wake up.

Use Mantra Music🎶

Let’s be honest though, many of us check our phones even if our eyes aren’t fully open. So how can we fix this? My solution is positive affirmations and mantra music.

If our brains are a blank, fast absorbing canvas as soon as we wake up, I would want to fill it with good vibes. Right?

This is where high vibe affirmation music comes in.

I’ve noticed when I wake up early on a work day, my first thoughts in the morning are filled with dread. To combat this, I instantly put on my high vibe playlist so I hear mantras like “I wake up every day feeling good” and “it’s a beautiful day to take on the world”.

Over time it’s natural to memorize the lyrics, so guess what’s on repeat in the back of my mind? Words that manifest into my reality! These songs are perfect for getting you in the right mindset for having a great day, going to work, or just reminding myself to take it easy.

As fun as it is to listen to music about shaking your ass and partying into oblivion, there’s a time and place. Indulging too much in this music will shape your reality as well. You have the power to choose what will sink into your subconscious. Do you really want the only things floating around in there to be about “hoes” and “bitches”? BFFR.

Conclusion

Do yourself a favor and adjust what you’re consuming, especially first thing in the morning.

I learned much more about this topic a few years ago from TikTok. A creator, who is no longer active on social media, shared how she changed her life with high frequency music and linked her regularly updated high vibe playlist.

I found a few of my favorite songs and put them in my own playlist so I didn’t find myself skipping though. What can I say, I didn’t like the tunes to all of them lol.

You can find my playlist linked here and her playlist linked here.

Enjoy!
