I was listening to Almost 30 Podcast episode 700 where our girl Krista interviewed David Ghiyam. He discussed Kabbalah, which is a form of Judaism that has so many incredible spiritual aspects to it. I’d never heard of this branch in Judaism and it was so interesting to learn about especially since so many of my spiritual beliefs align.
In this conversation, they broke down some facts about evil eye. I always thought about evil eye as a little blue bead that provides protection but after this episode, I gained so much more insight that it also turned into a mini internet rabbit hole.
What is an evil eye?
Evil eye is a glare thought to bring harm to the person on the other side of the gaze. It’s a spiritual belief and everyone has an evil eye within them that can be awakened.
Different cultures connect to evil eyes in their own ways but at a baseline, all evil eyes are seen as bad vibes that cause harm to others.
As a way to combat the harm from the evil eye, a physical charm was created. Blue is the most common form of protection but you’ll also see it in different colors.
In Judaism, you might even find the evil eye decorated in a Hamsa, a protective hand.
Understanding Jealousy
I’m sure you’ve been told jealousy is a bad emotion. It totally can be but you’re more empowered than you realize. When we tune inward and listen to our emotions, you’ll realize that jealousy just means you want that thing.
You’re jealous someone is going on a trip? You want a vacation!
You’re jealous of someone’s new car? You want a new car!
Jealous that the girl you hate has a handsome new boyfriend? You want a healthy partner.
The list can go on. You get the point.
Jealousy evokes a sense of lack which opens your evil eye and you can either empower yourself to chase after what you want or wallow in your misery, bringing others down.
Your Evil Eye
Put a finger down if you have ever been in a situation where I person you strongly dislike announces something great that happens to them (relationship, new home, a baby, european vacation, etc) and you hope and pray that you see their good fortune fall apart in the name of “karma”.
puts finger down
Listen, I’ve been there! We all have! And there’s a lot to unpack there about our egos and insecurities.
My Experience
Heck, I remember during my freshman year of high school, there was this girl that went out of her way to treat me poorly but we were stuck together. In the beginning of the year she announced that she’d be attending a summer wedding in Jamaica. This girl would not shut up about it for months!
Without realizing it, I kept sending out into the Universe that I believed in my bones that she wouldn’t actually be going. I swear it was like a gut feeling. I wouldn’t be surprised if other people in our class were also jealous that she had the opportunity to go to such a glamorous destination too.
Well, friends, shortly before she was supposed to hop on the plane, her family canceled their trip. The details are a little fuzzy, I mean this was like 10 years ago, but I believe some family emergency came up and to my delight, this girl’s dream of dancing at a Jamaican destination wedding went down the drain.
I’m not saying that a bunch of 14 year olds were responsible for a family emergency, but with reflection I can definitely say that our energy set the Universe in motion. Remember, the Universe responds to vibration.
That being said, when you’re wishing misfortune on someone else rather than turning inward, you cause some energy shifts. Your evil eye can affect their experience if they’re not protected.
Take my example from above. We sent so much evil eye on that girl and her trip got canceled. Another example, which is being taken straight from Almost 30 episode 700, is a fancy new car. If your evil eye opens on your friend’s exciting new car, that car will be more likely to get pulled over, scratched, or damaged.
Your Ego & Evil Eye
Now, don’t let your ego inflate, dear reader. You are not the Universe! Your bad energy may weaken the good energy surrounding whatever your evil eye is envying but ultimately, you can’t change anything that is meant to be.
Think about how many times you’ve looked at a couple and scoffed “I bet they’re going to break up”. After many months or even years, they break up. You rejoice! Your ego is temporarily satisfied!
But why, my friend, do you really believe that has anything to do with you? We’re all here on our own spiritual journeys and have many lessons to learn. That couple you envied simply weren’t meant to be together for a lifetime and that’s part of their growth. The Universe has it under control. You’re not a fortune teller, you’re just jealous.
You may be trying to argue with me by saying: “They deserve bad things to happen! They suck!” Girl, I get why you’re thinking this way. I still have many moments like this! Ultimately, that’s not our business. They’re going through life just like we are. They might be a villain in your life but that doesn’t mean they’re a bad person and the Universe has its own plans for them. It’s not up to you.
How To Manage Your Evil Eye & Envy
Healing time!
When you notice you’re turning green with envy, pause. Identify why this feeling of lack is popping up. What is it that you want that the other person has?
And as hard as this next part may be, I want you to be happy for this other person. Send them love and light. Send them good vibes. This can be really difficult so if necessary, create a little bit of loving distance with the person you’re jealous of until you nurture your feeling of lack. There’s no need to rain on their parade.
Sending good vibes is immensely harder when it’s for someone you hate. Personally, I create as much space as possible with people that bring out the worst in me. I take them out of my sight as much as I can. Better to cultivate feelings of neutrality rather than hatred.
Moving on…after the good vibes are established, it’s time to manifest what you desire! Ask the Universe to point you in the right direction so you can have whatever it is you want. Ask the Universe to give you the tools you need to make your dream a reality.
Protecting Yourself From Others’ Evil Eye
The first thing that pops into mind for protection is the evil eye charms. I have one on my bedroom door to keep bad energy away from my sacred space. You could also wear the symbol as jewelry, like a bracelet!
You ultimately don’t need to drop money to protect yourself though. Energy is everything and we’re going to use that to our advantage now that we’re educated on envy! ;)
Find Your People
As you heal, you’ll notice the quality of your relationships improves. Find a small knit group of people you know without a doubt that you can trust. These people should be the type that cheer you on and lift you up, regardless of what they’re going through and you should be doing the same for them.
You should never be pressured to tell anyone anything. I’ve learned through lots of healing anf therapy that my mother has a lot of lack residing inside her heart. That woman is constantly envying and angry.
Let’s rewind a couple of years…during my drive down to Florida for my first Disney College Program, my mother asked me “What are you hoping to get out of this program? Think in your heart of hearts.”
My heart's response was, “To be more independent”.
She responded, “Well, you’re not really being independent”. I’M SORRY WHAT?!
She asked me for such intimate information and instantly squashed it. Of course, I could write a novel of all the horrible things she’s said with detailed analysis of each, but in this case, even though I was going to gain more skills to operate on my own, she couldn’t handle that I am my own person rather than an extension of her. We’re talking about the woman that constantly reminds me she preferred me when I was little anyway.
At that point in time, I knew I shouldn’t have told her what my heart’s desire was. She had proved over and over that I would simply be invalidated if I didn’t align with what she wanted.
And for the record, I was definitely gaining more independence during the DCP. I moved to a different state where I was in charge of paying rent, grocery shopping, and working to stay afloat for the first time in my life for goodness sake. Her statement was unconscious manipulation to keep me dependent on her.
I learned really quickly after that to keep my guard high up around my heart with people that aren’t there to unconditionally cheer me on.
Minimize The People You Tell
It’s normal to want to scream from the mountain tops when you’re excited about something. I love that you want to share your joy! But when something is new and in the beginning stages, it’s delicate. Evil eye can easily tear it apart.
Although I love your vulnerability and desire to share good news, I strongly recommend only telling people in your super small trusted group until everything is solidified.
For example, I finally manifested my first trip abroad and I didn’t have to pay for a single thing. This was such a blessing! The trip was MONTHS in the works but I barely told anyone until the non-refundable tickets were booked and the itinerary was set.
I only told the people that needed to know such as my boyfriend, my closest besties, and my bosses so I could request time off.
A lot of people made comments that they felt my trip was so last minute. They only saw it that way because I kept my dream on the down-low. Some people didn’t even know I was leaving the country until the day before.
I minimized the risk of anyone sending their bad vibes my way. And even if they were opening their evil eyes on me, my trip was set in stone at that point. Their evil eyes had no effect.
Gratitude
Keep trusting that the Universe has your back. Spread your love and light. Calling in abundant energy will protect you and maybe even inspire those around you.
Continue expressing gratitude to whatever it is you’re celebrating. The Universe will keep feeding into it and bring it to a more solid foundation.
Crystals
You already know I’m a crystal girlie! Wear crystals and keep them around you to help protect you and ward off bad energy. I love clear quartz, black obsidian, and labradorite for protection but you’re encouraged to do more research and trust your intuition to find what best serves you.
Intention
Intentionality is everything. Be humble and mindful when you speak about your manifestation and send love to those that may have an open evil eye
When your manifestation comes to fruition, whether it be a trip, new car, baby, etc., welcome the intention that you’re engaging with these things with love for yourself and others.
Conclusion
Jealousy isn’t as negative as we’ve been taught to believe. It can absolutely become toxic, but we can heal from the feelings of lack and give ourselves the life of our dreams. We are powerful, beautiful souls. The evil eye is real, but you can protect yourself and change your relationship with envy.
